Top 10 Takeaways from BMA15 Chapter Leader Day

[caption id="attachment_3162" align="aligncenter" width="500"] #BMA15 kicked off today with the Chapter Leader pre-session[/caption] No long blog posts here this week! The 2015 edition of the National Business Marketing Association National Conference, BMA15 / Be More, kicked off today with a pre-session of Chapter Leaders. Chapter Leaders are those who serve in leadership positions at the 20+ local chapters that make up the BMA.   As promised, no long blog posts from Tell Your Story this week. So here are my take-aways from today. Watch for our other lists from my colleagues at the end of each day.   10. Chapter Leaders are passionate. We have all built great communities. That needs to continue – local B2B community building.   9. The merger with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) could potentially be a good thing in terms of promoting the profession of B2B Marketing, but the beauty of BMA is that we are not too corporate. ANA is...

Blackhawks Rally to Bring Stanley Cup Home

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="630"] Cover for the official Chicago Blackhawks 2013 Stanley Cup champs book. via NHL.[/caption]   We aren’t hockey fanatics, but the story of Lord Stanley, his Cup and how it made its way to Chicago last night is a great tale to tell. And it is just the beginning.   Chicagoans and Hawks fans alike (is there a difference?) flooded the city streets Monday night after the Blackhawks defeated the Bruins 3-2 in a last minute scoring frenzy. Even the fairest of fans have to admit the win was epic, with two goals scored within 17 seconds of each other. The game secured the franchise’s fifth title and second in the last four years.   [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="611"] Stanley Cup Champions! NeoCon: The Ultimate Paradise for Architects & Designers

If you’re an architect or designer, you’ve undoubtedly heard about and have likely attended NeoCon, the largest design exposition and conference for commercial interiors in North America. A show chock-full of inspiration and innovation, this is where creativity came to life for over 40,000 A&D professionals and over 700 exhibitors last week at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart.   As a NeoCon newbie, I was amazed to see how celebrated and highly regarded the show is throughout the A&D community—truly a creative’s paradise. Whether you’re drifting through Steelcase’s colossal permanent showroom on the 3rd floor, exploring the exhibitor booths on 7 and 8, or trying to navigate the elevators and food court during the lunch rush, you can’t escape the sense of excitement and urgency from tens of thousands of people trying to soak it all in.   Tell Your Story client, USG Corporation, was exhibiting their new Pixels Wall Mounted Panels so most of my...

Chickens, Brand Architecture and Other Things I Learned at #BMAGROW

Business Marketing Network Association

I’m still digesting all of the great presentations and experiences from this year’s, 2012 Business Marketing Association National Conference, GROW, but here are a few things I learned:

Chickens and Brand Architecture Just Don’t Mix

You had me at chickens, but lost me at architecture. I loved the start of the presentation by BBN Global Network, Bader Rutter and Pfizer Animal Health about Global Brand Activation. Pfizer Animal Health’s poultry business embarked on developing a global brand and they started out by using great visuals in their presentation evoking affection and emotion about what they do. Then they got into the brand architecture and positioning mumbo jumbo language and hard-to-read slides and lost me. Then again, maybe it was too early after a late night at Red Head Piano Bar.

Consistent Quality Networking is Key to Career Happiness

I’ve had the great opportunity to attend many national BMA conferences. I am involved on the local level and have always worked for companies who believe in the value of the organization. Over the past four days, it was confirmed to me that the ones doing the right amount of networking consistently over time are the ones who are most successful and happiest with their careers. BMA gives B2B marketers that forum.

Social Media Drives Membership

Social Media Membership

The August issue of the national Business Marketing Association newsletter features how social media is helping drive membership for the Chicago chapter. We are big supporters of the BMA and play a role in keeping it the nation’s strongest chapter. Check out some of the things we’ve been involved with to make thing happen for this great organization.

Content: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In this short Tell Your Story interview at a recent social media gathering, IBM’s David Pittman talks about his Reduce, Reuse and Recycle philosophy when it comes to content creation for communications and social media uses. His philosophy took shape when he was at a much smaller company than IBM, but you can put this thinking to use at all kinds of companies, regardless of size.

In short, he is saying that most companies have all of the content they need to consistently share their compelling stories through social media channels. The content already exists in various forms — sell sheets, web sites, press releases, brochures…etc. You just need to be resourceful with what is already created and reduce, reuse and recycle. Then, if resources and budget allows, get creative with developing new content.

Fundamentals Don’t Change; But You Need to Get With It!

Great job by the national Business Marketing Association national conference organizers who pulled this off in Chicago back in June. The iconic “Man in the Chair” ad was acted out and updated for today’s times. Everything the “modern” executive says is incredibly true in today’s social media world. Whether you are a big company, small start up, a non-profit organization or a student, you need to get with it soon. Make it a 2010 new year resolution.
